NEVER TO BE FINAL - MONTE-CARLO

Posted by SHELDON MCDONALD on Sunday, April 22, 2012

No one could have predicted this latest twist in the Monte Carlo saga. Just a few minutes prior to the clash of the titans in the form of Douglas and Mullings, the spectators were informed by the tournament director, Andre Ewan, that they would be refunded the cost of their tickets, as Douglas was a no show for the epic final. Ewan had to make a hasty retreat as the crowds’ reaction was nothing to write home about.

The mystery surrounding Douglas’ disappearance deepened as he also failed to show up at what was to be the post match press conference, a penalty which attracted a US$4,000 fine. Mullings however, used the opportunity during his segment of the press briefing to make it clear that he was neither amused, nor was he surprised. He in no uncertain terms, referred to Douglas as a coward who has yet to get over his straight set shut out in their recent Davis Cup clash.

In yet another twist, rumours began to surface via reuters reports, that Douglas sent a text message to his doubles partner, McDonald, which stated that he was already on his way to prepare for the Rome tournament, hoping to have no confrontation with Mullings until his confidence is fully recovered. However, it is alleged that he accidentally posted this message on his twitter account, leading millions of followers around the world to learn of his true motives. It is further alleged that Douglas immediately closed his twitter account to prevent further embarrassment to his camp. The latest however is that Douglas has issued a statement to the TJTC board, via his agent, that due to a sudden diagnosis of Sjorgen’s syndrome, he has had to seek immediate medical attention, available at this time, only in Rome. The statement went on to request that Douglas be given the same respect that Venus Williams received when she had to withdraw with short notice from a recent tournament under similar circumstances.

One looks forward to the next clay court tournament in Rome. Will Mullings continue to dominate, or will the other top players show up to silence the critics and make their presence felt? The suspense rages on!
